Friday class:

HAND CUT DOVETAILS

Dovetail class
HAND TOOL WOODWORKING

Hand cut dovetails are considered the mark of a craftsman. In this one day class we’ll introduce you to the techniques and steps to cut dovetails by hand using a hand saw and chisels.

Why is this a beginner class? Dovetails teach you the basics of layout and markup, using a handsaw and using a chisel to pare and chop. Dovetails are easier to cut and fit than mortice and tenon joinery. There are more tricks and they’re more forgiving. Plus, if you go home and practice them you can improve rapidly.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

In this class you’ll learn:

What a dovetail is

How to layout out dovetails

How to saw to a line

How to sharpen and maintain a chisel

How to pare and chop to a line with a chisel

Make through and half blind dovetails

The art of fitting dovetails

TOOLS:

For this class you will need to bring your own tools.

Learning to sharpen is best done working on your own chisel – please bring a 1/2″ and 1/4″ chisel. The Irwin Tools Marples Woodworking chisel (or similar) is very reasonable – about $13

The saw I recommend is SUIZAN Japanese Saw 6″ Dozuki (Dovetail)
Regular price $24.85

You will also need a carvers mallet, they can be purchased from a variety of locations, and  I sell some for $20.

Class size: 2

Cost: $180.00

Wood Materials Charge: $30

 Wednesday class

HAND CUT MORTISE AND TENON

Mortise & Tenon class

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING

ABOUT

In this one day intensive, you will learn how to quickly and efficiently layout, cut and fit mortice and tenon joinery using only hand tools.

I will show you time-tested, traditional techniques to create wedged, drawbored, and hunched mortise and tenon joints.

By the end of the class l think you will be convinced that not only are these joints doable by hand (it was, after all, the only way to do them up until the mid 1800’s) but that hand work can offer a faster approach when doing a one-of kind piece of furniture. In any case, you will not need a dust mask, earplugs or a hardhat during the course of the class.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Laying out of Mortice and Tenon joinery. Many of the dimensions for the joints are dictated by the tools you use not the dimensions of the wood.

Cutting mortices with mortice chisels, drills and bench chisels

Cutting tenons with tenon and carcass saws

Tuning / fitting mortice and tenon joints

Making wedged through tenons

Draw boring and making dowels to mechanically lock  mortice and tenon joint

TOOLS:

plan to purchase the following tools for this class.

chisel 1/4” 1/2″

Carvers mallet

SUIZAN Japanese Pull Saw Hand Saw 9-1/2″ Ryoba Amozon $35.99

Class starts at 9:00am, ends at 1:00pm

Build a side table

Build a side table class

BUILD A SIDE TABLE

ABOUT

Building a side table is rite of passage for a beginning furniture maker. This is the first piece that can be constructed with joinery and glue.

In this course you’ll focus on the joinery and design techniques to create a simple but elegant side table. We provide you with a kit of parts to build a side table no larger than 36”x 16”by up to 30″ tall. Add hand-tooled embellishments to create a unique piece.

This class is designed to introduce the new hand tool woodworker to basic furniture making techniques and explore design and ornamentation within a structured project.

This is also a class where a more experienced woodworker can work on a design for a side table before class. And then refine that design with comments and review by the instructor and build it in class. Please let us know if you are bringing a design.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Topics covered in class include:

Refine the basic design
Join the legs and aprons with hand cut mortise and tenons reinforced with draw-bored pins
Create elegantly tapered legs
Put a silky smooth surface on the top with the smoothing plane
Profile the table top lighten the edges or add some gentle detail
Use traditional forms of detailing to lighten and refine the legs and aprons
Develop a look for the table with traditional finishes. Start the finishing of the top. You’ll need to complete the finishing at home.

TOOLS

If you have started to build your own set of hand tools we encourage you to bring them along to the class so that you can deepen your experience with them and work with the instructors to tune and fully understand them.

MATERIALS

This is a fully kitted course. We will be working to a standardized design from prepared stock. Each kit will be milled from Alder or Cherry . These woods balance visual appeal, strength and ease of working. Both woods hold fine detail and finish well.
