A Generational Treasure: Crafting a Timeless Cabinet
Recently, I came across a captivating image that brought back memories of a special project I undertook for a client. This particular commission involved the creation of a cabinet designed to house a priceless family heirloom: a brass teller gate. This gate, a cherished piece dating back to the 1920s, has been passed down through generations, symbolizing the family’s rich history and heritage.

My clients approached me with the idea of crafting a cabinet that would not only showcase the beautiful brass gate but would also serve as a functional piece of furniture. They envisioned a creation that would protect the gate while also allowing it to seamlessly blend into their home. The goal was to transform this gate into a useful generational treasure—a piece that their family could continue to appreciate and pass down for years to come.
As I began the design process, I kept in mind the significance of both the brass teller gate and my clients’ family traditions. The result was a unique cabinet that honors the past while providing a practical solution for the present. This project exemplifies the beauty of combining craftsmanship with family legacy, ensuring that such treasures remain an integral part of family history for future generations. I have a deep appreciation for generational wealth it binds the family to its past and give meaning and a story to not only past generations but future generations as well so start your story by commissioning me to create something for your family visit my Commission projects page for information on commissioning me.

Origins of Mission Furniture
I recently received a fascinating request to design a piece of furniture—a bookcase, to be precise. We arranged a meeting so I could assess the space and take in the surrounding decor. Upon arrival, I was struck by their collection of mission furniture, which inspired me to let that aesthetic guide my design. They also had some newer high-end pieces adorned with marquetry. So, if you’re curious about the origins of mission furniture, allow me to share a bit of history that reveals its rich craftsmanship.
Mission furniture emerged in the late 19th century, closely intertwined with the Arts and Crafts movement. This movement arose as a heartfelt response to the mass production that marked the Industrial Revolution, advocating for a return to craftsmanship, simplicity, and functionality. It drew deeply on the traditions of medieval artisanship and diverse decorative arts. In this era, a renewed appreciation for folk art blossomed, as many sought to rebel against the excessive ornamentation of the Victorian period. Influential figures such as Gustav Stickley championed this cause, promoting furniture that celebrated genuine beauty and the honest use of materials.
The designation “Mission” traces its roots back to the Mission style of architecture found in California, itself influenced by Spanish colonial design. This approach was characterized by sturdy constructions, straight lines, and flat panels—elements that come together to create a robust and timeless aesthetic. Craftsmen typically chose quarter-sawn white oak for its resilience and captivating grain, ensuring that their pieces would stand the test of time. By employing visible joinery techniques, such as mortise and tenon joints, they allowed the skill of the maker to shine, adding depth to the design while staying true to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement—where utility took precedence over unnecessary embellishments.
As enthusiasm for Mission furniture grew, it became synonymous with a broader cultural movement that embraced moral simplicity and an appreciation for handcraftsmanship. This timeless style permeated home décor, often gracing the spaces of individuals who treasured artistic integrity. Thus, Mission furniture emerged as a symbol of a lifestyle that espoused communal values and artisanal spirit, embodying a longing for authenticity in a rapidly changing world.
Mission furniture is unmistakable due to its distinctive qualities. One of its standout features is the emphasis on unwaveringly clean lines and simple geometric forms, which contribute a sense of strength and stability. Craftsmen often chose to leave the wood, especially oak, unstained or minimally finished, allowing its natural beauty and rich grain to speak for themselves. The color palette leans towards earthy tones, filled with warm browns and ambers, inviting a sense of comfort that resonates throughout any space adorned with Mission pieces.
Functional design holds a paramount place in the realm of Mission furniture. Each piece is crafted with a clear purpose in mind, often incorporating features that enhance its usability and practicality. For instance, Mission-style chairs and tables are thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and support, featuring wide, sturdy arms and deeply inviting seats. Similarly, storage solutions—like cabinets and bookshelves—are meticulously crafted to maximize utility while maintaining their minimalist elegance. This pragmatic approach aligns beautifully with the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement, where the harmony between function and form is celebrated.
Above all, the craftsmanship involved in creating Mission furniture is its most compelling attribute. Artisans traditionally employed hand tools and time-honored methods, resulting in pieces that exhibit remarkable quality and meticulous attention to detail. With joints often left visible, the artistry of construction is apparent, while decorative elements such as slatted designs and hammered metal hardware add character to their work. This dedication to craftsmanship not only imparts a unique personality to each piece but also reinforces the Mission philosophy, which honors the beauty of handmade creations and the stories embedded within each item.
The legacy of Mission furniture is one that endures, continuing to influence a range of design movements across the years. Its dedication to handmade quality and artistic integrity persists in contemporary furniture design, where many makers strive to merge aesthetics with function. The recent revival of interest in artisanal craftsmanship has further fueled the popularity of Mission-style furniture, appealing to a new generation that treasures authenticity and sustainable design approaches.
Within the context of American design, Mission furniture holds historic significance. It reflects a time when furniture was not only a necessity but also a manifestation of personal values and community ideals. Many Americans embraced Mission furniture as a means to create homes infused with principles of simplicity and purpose. The style’s connection to the social movements of its day imbues it with deeper meaning, linking it to narratives of culture, identity, and the arts.
Today, Mission furniture remains highly regarded for its timeless appeal, versatility, and unwavering sturdiness. It finds its place seamlessly within both traditional and modern homes, cherished for its ability to adapt to various decor styles. Collectible Mission pieces have also become sought-after treasures in antique markets, affirming their enduring desirability. The continual appreciation for this furniture style serves as a testament to its cultural significance and the craftsmanship it embodies, ensuring its rightful place in the chronicles of design history. The Importance of Craftsmanship in Society: A Call to Support Local Artisans
In an age where mass production dominates the market, the value of craftsmanship stands out as a beacon of quality, individuality, and cultural heritage. Society holds craftsmen in high regard, not only for their exceptional skills but also for the myriad ways they contribute to the communities around them. Understanding the significance of artisans and supporting their work is essential for fostering a vibrant, sustainable future.
The Skill and Dedication of Craftsmanship
Craftsmanship is characterized by expertise that has been meticulously honed over years of practice. Whether it’s woodworking, pottery, tailoring, or any other artisanal skill, each piece created reflects a commitment to quality and creativity. The process often involves a deep understanding of materials and techniques that are passed down through generations, making each handcrafted item unique. This sense of individuality is particularly appealing in today’s marketplace, where consumers are increasingly seeking products that resonate with their values and aesthetic preferences.
In contrast to mass-produced items, which prioritize efficiency and uniformity, handcrafted goods highlight the beauty of imperfection and the personal touch of the creator. Each piece tells a story, encapsulating the artisan’s vision, labor, and passion. This connection between the maker and the object fosters a deeper appreciation among consumers, transforming mere transactions into meaningful exchanges.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Craftsmen also play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage. Traditional crafting skills often reflect the history and identity of a community. The techniques employed by artisans can embody the values, stories, and practices of their culture, serving as a bridge between generations. By supporting local craftsmen, we not only promote their trades but also help keep these cultural narratives alive.
In many cases, artisans engage in practices that have been used for centuries, providing a sense of continuity in a rapidly changing world. These traditions can foster a shared identity within communities, providing opportunities for local pride and cohesion. By valuing and supporting craftsmanship, society can work towards preserving cultural expressions that contribute to our collective identity.
Economic Impact and Local Empowerment
The economic contributions of craftsmen should not be overlooked. Shopping locally and supporting artisans helps sustain community economies by keeping money within the region. Local artisans often rely on their networks, sourcing materials from nearby suppliers and selling directly to consumers. This approach fosters entrepreneurship and job creation, offering meaningful employment opportunities in the community.
Additionally, by championing local craftsmanship, communities can become more resilient to global market shifts. When consumers prioritize local artisans over mass-produced goods, they contribute to a diverse economy that can withstand fluctuations and challenges. This empowerment of local businesses helps create a sustainable economic environment, ensuring that artisans can continue their work and contribute to community development.
Sustainable Practices
Supporting craftsmen aligns with a growing awareness of sustainability and ethical consumption. Many artisans prioritize eco-friendly methods and responsibly sourced materials, taking great care to minimize their environmental impact. In contrast to mass production, which often prioritizes low cost and high volume at the expense of the environment, artisanal practices typically emphasize quality, durability, and minimal waste.
By choosing handcrafted items, consumers can make a positive impact on the planet while enjoying the unique benefits of artisanal products. This commitment to sustainability not only helps protect the environment but also promotes a lifestyle that values quality over quantity.
A Collective Responsibility
As consumers, we hold a collective responsibility to support craftsmen within our communities. This can be achieved through various means, such as purchasing handmade goods, spreading awareness of local artisans, and advocating for policies that promote local crafts. Engaging with artisans at markets, workshops, or through online platforms also strengthens the connection between makers and consumers.
In conclusion, the high regard for craftsmen in society is well-deserved. By recognizing the skill, cultural significance, and economic contributions of artisans, we can foster communities that thrive on creativity and sustainability. Supporting local craftsmen enriches our lives and preserves the richness of our shared heritage, creating a vibrant tapestry of culture that can be passed down to future generations. Let us come together to champion these skilled individuals and ensure that their crafts continue to flourish in our communities.
Here are some traditional crafts that are very much alive today, showcasing skills and techniques that have been passed down through generations:

This is a desk I was commissioned to create for a local artist it was made of cherry. My client called with the basic question could I create a desk for him to have all his art supplies close to his work. He had fond the plans of a certain desk he wanted but it was back East and shipping would cost an arm and leg so asked if I would make it so we did. I am not a fan of copping work so we made a few changes the plans had wheels instead of solid feet then I also added solid front with pulls on there plan were just cutout’s for your hand . I also added a paper towel holder under the garbage can pullout. I like the looks and the client is happy so this was a fun project to create.

Ensuring Equal Access to Artistic Experiences: A Gateway to Cultural Enrichment
In today’s society, the unequal access to artistic experiences—such as visits to art galleries, attending music and theater performances, and engaging with literature—remains a significant concern. This disparity is often fueled by factors including geographic location, financial constraints, and educational inequities. Unfortunately, these barriers prevent many individuals from experiencing the transformative power of the arts, which in turn affects their ability to appreciate and value these cultural forms.
Artistic experiences play a crucial role in our lives by stimulating the mind, evoking deep emotions, and fostering a sense of connection with diverse cultures and perspectives. Engaging with the arts—whether through the immediacy of a live performance, the introspective contemplation of a gallery visit, or the immersive narrative of a good book—can profoundly transform our views and enhance our empathy. However, when opportunities to engage with the arts are not equally available, many people miss out on these enriching benefits.
Geographic and financial barriers often mean that people from less privileged backgrounds have limited opportunities to visit renowned art institutions or attend performances. Educational disparities can exacerbate this issue, as schools in under-resourced areas might not have the means to provide robust arts programs. This lack of exposure can lead to a diminished connection with and understanding of the arts, which further perpetuates cultural inequities.
The issue of accessibility is not limited to the traditional arts but extends to crafts as well. Craftsmen, who rely on the visibility and appreciation of their work, are particularly affected by this lack of access. When people are not exposed to the diversity of art forms, including handcrafted items, they may not develop a true appreciation for the skill and creativity involved in craftwork. This can negatively impact the livelihood of craftsmen, as fewer people recognize and support their work. Moreover, the knowledge and traditions of various crafts can be lost if future generations are not inspired to learn and carry on these practices.
Increasing accessibility to artistic experiences is essential for promoting cultural awareness and personal growth. By finding ways to make the arts more accessible—such as offering free or subsidized tickets, creating community-based arts programs, and integrating arts and crafts education into school curriculums—society can ensure that a broader range of individuals have the chance to engage with and appreciate the arts. This not only enriches individuals’ lives but also contributes to a more empathetic and culturally aware society. Furthermore, it can provide much-needed support to craftsmen, helping to preserve and promote their invaluable skills and traditions.
In conclusion, addressing the issue of unequal access to artistic experiences is critical for fostering a more inclusive and enriched society. By overcoming barriers and providing greater opportunities for everyone to engage with the arts and crafts, we can unlock the full potential of cultural enrichment and personal growth for all. This, in turn, benefits artists, craftsmen, and society as a whole, creating a more vibrant and interconnected cultural landscape.

Hey there! Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my journey as a furniture maker, and I’ve noticed that I’ve drifted a bit from my own style. While I absolutely love helping others discover their unique tastes and creating pieces that fit their needs, relying solely on commissions hasn’t allowed my own creative spark to shine as bright as I’d like.

Just this morning, as I enjoyed my breakfast and admired one of my earlier creations—where my coffee was happily perched—I had a lightbulb moment! That piece brought back so much joy, and it reminded me of my passion for crafting. I can’t wait to share it on my website and offer others the chance to bring such a special item into their homes. I’m excited to reconnect with my creativity and start making furniture that truly reflects who I am!

I was tasked with crafting a compact couch for a client approximately three years ago. Residing in a cozy tiny home, she sought something distinct for her space. Together, we conceived a cherry couch featuring storage below. To add a touch of artistry, she requested an inlay design, and thus I proposed a sunflower on the front panel and two bees on the sides. It was a delightful challenge to conceptualize and construct this piece. Collaborating with an upholsterer for the seat, the project truly became a bespoke endeavor. Ultimately, both the client and I were thrilled with the final result.

Handcrafted Furniture: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Memories
When I exhibit my handcrafted furniture at local fairs, I frequently encounter a slew of excuses from people about why they can’t own such beautiful pieces. The most common reason? “My kids will destroy it.”
I usually respond with a polite smile and tell them to give me a call if they ever change their mind. But in my head, I picture my own four boys. They’ve grown up in our Washington state home, enduring long winter months cooped up inside. And yet, my furniture remains in pristine condition. Remarkably, most of the pieces in our home have been crafted by me.
Ironically, if any creature has put my furniture to the test, it was a neurotic dog. This furry whirlwind once ran full speed into the leg of an end table—the very first piece I made back in 1996. That leg wasn’t joined well because, at that time, I was still learning. If anyone is careless in our household, it’s probably me. But I also have the skills to fix whatever gets damaged.
I make furniture because I love the process and the end product. Each piece adds a unique, artsy, and beautiful touch to our home, a place where I spend a lot of time. So, why not make it a place that brings me happiness?
My creations are more than just furniture; they are stories in the making. Someday, when my children inherit these pieces, they’ll have tales to share with their own kids and grandchildren about how their great-grandfather built furniture, just as those before him did.
We need stories like these in the world—unique pieces made by local craftsmen who pour their heart and soul into their work. So, next time you see a craftsman’s booth at a fair, don’t just walk by, thinking you can’t have something nice because it’s “too precious” or making excuses not to invest in something meaningful.
These pieces are much more than furniture; they are vessels of memories and stories that can last for generations. Yes, we can’t take our possessions with us when we go. But the memories they hold ensure we are not forgotten. So, consider investing in a piece that will serve as a beautiful reminder of the past and create new memories for the future.
