The Artist desk

This is a desk I was commissioned to create for a local artist it was made of cherry. My client called with the basic question could I create a desk for him to have all his art supplies close to his work. He had fond the plans of a certain desk he wanted but it was back East and shipping would cost an arm and leg so asked if I would make it so we did. I am not a fan of copping work so we made a few changes the plans had wheels instead of solid feet then I also added solid front with pulls on there plan were just cutout’s for your hand . I also added a paper towel holder under the garbage can pullout. I like the looks and the client is happy so this was a fun project to create.

Reflecting Identity Through Fine Furniture: The Art of Handcrafted Pieces

As a maker of fine furniture, I’ve always believed that the best pieces can tell a story about who you are. When you surround yourself with handcrafted furniture, you’re not just filling a room; you’re creating a space that speaks to your soul, your roots, and your aspirations.

A Mirror of Identity

Selecting furniture is a deeply personal act. You’re making choices that reflect your taste, your history, and your values. It’s not just about style—it’s about finding that perfect balance between beauty and function, a harmony that resonates within you.

Take a finely crafted rocking chair, for example. Its elegant lines and warm, inviting wood not only offer a comfortable place to rest but also tell a story of artistry and dedication. The subtle grain patterns, the smooth curves—they all add up to create something that’s uniquely yours, much like the experiences and memories that shape who we are.

The Artistic Nature of Handcrafted Furniture

Furniture making is an art form, closely akin to painting or sculpting. When I create a piece, I see it as creating a piece of functional art. Each stroke of the chisel, each smooth sanding motion is part of bringing the material to life.

Consider the process of crafting a dining table. It’s not just about joining pieces of wood together. It’s about understanding the soul of the wood, knowing how to bring out its beauty in a way that will stand the test of time. The end result is a piece that is as visually arresting as it is functional, much like a well-composed painting that you can live with and use every day.

The Connection Between Maker and Owner

When you invest in handcrafted furniture, you’re investing in a piece of the craftsman’s heart and soul. There’s a deep connection that forms when you own something that’s been lovingly created by human hands. It’s this connection that adds immeasurable value, turning everyday objects into heirlooms filled with emotional significance and personal history.

Moreover, handcrafted pieces often come with the option of customization, allowing you to put your own touch on a piece. This ensures that the final product is a true reflection of your tastes and requirements. It’s this personal touch that solidifies the bond between the furniture and your identity.

Sustainability and Individuality

In a world increasingly mindful of sustainability, handcrafted furniture stands out as an eco-conscious choice. Many craftsmen, like myself, use locally sourced and sustainable materials, employing methods that minimize waste. When you choose fine, handmade furniture, you’re supporting not just individual artisans but a whole ethos of sustainability and mindful creation

Conclusion

Fine furniture, particularly handcrafted pieces, go beyond mere functionality. They’re expressions of identity, crafted with care and imbued with the spirit of the maker. Each piece reflects the indelible marks of human touch, transforming ordinary materials into enduring works of art.

By welcoming these treasures into your home, you’re not only creating a beautiful space but one that’s deeply personal, filled with stories and identities of both the maker and the owner. In the end, fine furniture is a celebration of art, craftsmanship, and the unique tapestry of who we are. Hey there! Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my journey as a furniture maker, and I’ve noticed that I’ve drifted a bit from my own style. While I absolutely love helping others discover their unique tastes and creating pieces that fit their needs, relying solely on commissions hasn’t allowed my own creative spark to shine as bright as I’d like.

Innovative Elegance: The Evolution of Art Deco Furniture Through the Ages

Innovative Elegance: The Evolution of Art Deco Furniture Through the Ages

Art Deco furniture is a bold and distinctive style that emerged in the early 20th century, reaching the peak of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. This movement reflected the changing social and cultural landscape of the time, characterized by a desire for modernity, luxury, and avant-garde design.

The origins of Art Deco furniture can be traced back to the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925, from which the style takes its name. This event showcased a range of innovative and eclectic designs that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern materials and techniques. Art Deco furniture is known for its geometric shapes, bold colors, and luxurious materials such as exotic woods, ivory, and chrome.

One of the key features of Art Deco furniture is its emphasis on sleek, streamlined forms that were often inspired by modern technology and machinery. This can be seen in the use of geometric motifs such as chevrons, sunbursts, and zigzags, as well as the incorporation of angular shapes and clean lines.

In addition to its modern aesthetic, Art Deco furniture also embraced a sense of opulence and glamour. This can be seen in the use of lavish materials such as lacquered wood, polished metals, and exotic veneers, as well as in the intricate detailing and ornamentation that adorned many pieces.

Art Deco furniture was not only a reflection of the modern age, but also a response to it. In the aftermath of World War I, there was a desire for escapism and luxury, and Art Deco furniture provided a way for people to indulge in a sense of glamour and sophistication.

Although the popularity of Art Deco furniture waned following World War II, its influence can still be seen in contemporary design trends. Its bold aesthetic and luxurious materials continue to inspire designers and collectors alike, ensuring that the legacy of Art Deco furniture lives on as a symbol of elegance and innovation. The bee couch

I was tasked with crafting a compact couch for a client approximately three years ago. Residing in a cozy tiny home, she sought something distinct for her space. Together, we conceived a cherry couch featuring storage below. To add a touch of artistry, she requested an inlay design, and thus I proposed a sunflower on the front panel and two bees on the sides. It was a delightful challenge to conceptualize and construct this piece. Collaborating with an upholsterer for the seat, the project truly became a bespoke endeavor. Ultimately, both the client and I were thrilled with the final result.

Handcrafted Furniture: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Memories

Handcrafted Furniture: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Memories

When I exhibit my handcrafted furniture at local fairs, I frequently encounter a slew of excuses from people about why they can’t own such beautiful pieces. The most common reason? “My kids will destroy it.”

I usually respond with a polite smile and tell them to give me a call if they ever change their mind. But in my head, I picture my own four boys. They’ve grown up in our Washington state home, enduring long winter months cooped up inside. And yet, my furniture remains in pristine condition. Remarkably, most of the pieces in our home have been crafted by me.

Ironically, if any creature has put my furniture to the test, it was a neurotic dog. This furry whirlwind once ran full speed into the leg of an end table—the very first piece I made back in 1996. That leg wasn’t joined well because, at that time, I was still learning. If anyone is careless in our household, it’s probably me. But I also have the skills to fix whatever gets damaged.

I make furniture because I love the process and the end product. Each piece adds a unique, artsy, and beautiful touch to our home, a place where I spend a lot of time. So, why not make it a place that brings me happiness?

My creations are more than just furniture; they are stories in the making. Someday, when my children inherit these pieces, they’ll have tales to share with their own kids and grandchildren about how their great-grandfather built furniture, just as those before him did.

We need stories like these in the world—unique pieces made by local craftsmen who pour their heart and soul into their work. So, next time you see a craftsman’s booth at a fair, don’t just walk by, thinking you can’t have something nice because it’s “too precious” or making excuses not to invest in something meaningful.

These pieces are much more than furniture; they are vessels of memories and stories that can last for generations. Yes, we can’t take our possessions with us when we go. But the memories they hold ensure we are not forgotten. So, consider investing in a piece that will serve as a beautiful reminder of the past and create new memories for the future.
