This is an update I am working on the drawer at this point. I have all the details on the outside and it is ready to age. I use a different process that ages the pice in about a half hour using a water based product that brings the tannons out and darkens the wood.

“From Local Artisans to Global Homes: The Journey of Handcrafted Furniture”
In recent years, there has been a remarkable resurgence in the appreciation and demand for handcrafted furniture. This revival is driven by several factors, including a growing commitment to sustainable living, a renewed admiration for artisanal craftsmanship, and a shift towards unique, personalized home decor.
Handcrafted furniture, typically made from sustainably sourced materials and designed for longevity, presents an appealing option for those aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.
Moreover, there is an increasing appreciation for the artistry and skill involved in creating handcrafted pieces. Unlike mass-produced items, each handcrafted piece is unique, showcasing the distinct touch of the artisan. This individuality resonates with consumers who value originality and desire pieces that tell a story and reflect personal taste.
The rise of digital platforms has also expanded the reach of artisans, allowing them to connect with a global audience. Social media and online marketplaces enable furniture makers to showcase their work to potential customers worldwide, fostering a broader appreciation for their craft and helping them reach consumers who might not have discovered their work otherwise.
Additionally, the trend towards personalized and meaningful home decor has contributed to this resurgence. People are increasingly eager to create living spaces that reflect their identities and values. Handcrafted furniture, with its unique designs and bespoke options, empowers individuals to curate their homes in ways that mass-produced items cannot achieve.
In conclusion, the resurgence of handcrafted furniture makers reflects broader societal shifts towards sustainability, individuality, and the appreciation of craftsmanship. As consumers continue to seek meaningful and environmentally responsible choices, the demand for handcrafted furniture is likely to grow, ensuring that this timeless craft remains vibrant and relevant in the modern world.
In an era dominated by mass production, where identical items are churned out by the thousands, the allure of owning something unique becomes increasingly appealing. Handcrafted furniture offers this uniqueness, as each piece is often one-of-a-kind, reflecting the distinct vision and skill of the artisan. This uniqueness allows individuals to express their personal style in a way that mass-produced items cannot.
People are increasingly looking to differentiate their homes from the standardized aesthetics often seen in retail catalogs. By incorporating handcrafted furniture, they can create spaces that are truly their own, filled with items that resonate with their personal stories and experiences. This pursuit of uniqueness is not just about aesthetics; it is also about creating an environment that feels authentic and meaningful.
Artistic Expression
Artistic expression in handcrafted furniture transcends mere functionality; it transforms everyday items into works of art. Artisans infuse their creations with creativity, often drawing inspiration from nature, history, or cultural motifs. This artistic approach results in furniture that not only serves a practical purpose but also adds an element of beauty and intrigue to a space.
The process of crafting furniture by hand allows for a level of detail and customization that is rarely achievable in mass production. Artisans can experiment with different materials, finishes, and techniques, creating pieces rich in texture and character. This freedom of expression enables them to push the boundaries of traditional design, resulting in innovative and captivating furniture.
For consumers, owning handcrafted furniture becomes an opportunity to engage with art daily. Each piece carries the signature of the artisan, a testament to their skill and creativity. This connection to the creator adds depth to the ownership experience, as consumers appreciate not just the final product, but also the artistry and effort that went into its creation.
In summary, personal uniqueness and artistic expression are central to the appeal of handcrafted furniture. They offer consumers a way to break free from the monotony of mass-produced items, allowing them to create spaces that are as unique and expressive as they are. As people continue to seek meaningful and personalized experiences, the demand for handcrafted furniture that embodies these qualities is likely to continue to grow.

In today’s complex society and political landscape, the influence of corporations and small businesses is profound and multifaceted. While large corporations often wield significant power, sometimes resulting in adverse societal impacts, small businesses frequently emerge as champions of community welfare and economic resilience. This essay explores how corporations can harm society and politics, and how small businesses serve as a counterbalance, promoting positive change.
The Influence of Corporations
Economic Disparities: Large corporations often prioritize profit maximization, sometimes at the expense of equitable wealth distribution. This can lead to significant economic disparities, where wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few, exacerbating social inequalities. For example, multinational corporations may exploit tax loopholes, reducing their contributions to public services and infrastructure.
Environmental Impact: Corporations, particularly those in industries such as fossil fuels, agriculture, and manufacturing, can have detrimental effects on the environment. Their large-scale operations often result in pollution, deforestation, and resource depletion, contributing to climate change and environmental degradation.
Political Influence: Corporations wield considerable political influence through lobbying and campaign contributions. This can lead to policies that favor corporate interests over public welfare, undermining democratic processes and marginalizing the voices of ordinary citizens.
Consumer Culture: The marketing power of corporations promotes consumerism, encouraging a culture of excess and waste. This not only strains natural resources but also fosters a societal focus on material wealth over community and personal well-being.
The Role of Small Businesses
Community Engagement: Small businesses are often deeply embedded in their communities, fostering local connections and supporting community initiatives. They contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and keeping money circulating within the community, which can help reduce economic disparities.
Environmental Stewardship: Many small businesses prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly practices. They are often more agile and innovative, able to implement green initiatives that larger corporations might resist due to cost or complexity.
Political Participation: Small business owners are typically more accessible to their communities and can serve as advocates for local needs and interests. They can influence local policies in ways that reflect the values and priorities of their communities, promoting a more democratic and participatory political process.
Cultural Preservation: Small businesses often reflect the unique character and culture of their communities. By supporting local artisans, farmers, and entrepreneurs, they help preserve cultural heritage and promote diversity in the marketplace.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while corporations have the potential to drive economic growth and innovation, their focus on profit can sometimes harm society and the environment. In contrast, small businesses offer a model of economic activity that prioritizes community welfare, environmental stewardship, and democratic engagement. By supporting small businesses, society can work towards a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive future. Balancing the power of corporations with the positive influence of small businesses is crucial for addressing the challenges of today’s society and political world.

I’ve spent countless hours in my workshop as a professional woodworker. The scent of fresh-cut timber surrounds me. My tools create a constant hum. Each piece I create is a testament to the time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Yet, I can’t help but notice that the appreciation for handcrafted goods has dwindled. This change is due to industrialization.
The Industrial Revolution was a game-changer. It brought about incredible advancements. Factories produce goods at a scale and speed that artisans like myself only dream of. Suddenly, products were more affordable and widely available. But, this came at a cost. The unique charm and individuality of handmade items began to fade away.
For me, woodworking is more than just a profession; it’s a passion. Each handcrafted piece tells a story, one that reflects my skill, creativity, and dedication. There’s a certain magic in knowing that no two pieces are exactly alike. Each piece bears the subtle marks of the human hand. In a world where uniformity reigns, owning a handcrafted item is a reminder of the beauty of imperfection and authenticity.
A recent experience with a beautifully crafted tea cart brought me to this topic for this month’s blog feature. My wife and I recently moved to a small town just outside the city where we both grew up. There, we met a new friend who was selling this exquisite tea cart for just $200. My wife, with her keen eye, immediately questioned the low price. She knew my furniture instantly doubles in value when I incorporate marquetry. This increase is due to the intricate work involved. Curious, she looked up similar carts and discovered that they typically sell for a minimum of $2,000. This revelation was a stark reminder of how undervalued handcrafted pieces can be in today’s market.
Recently, I’ve seen a promising shift—a renewed interest in the art of handcrafts. People are starting to seek out handmade goods, drawn to their authenticity and the stories behind them. Artisan markets and online platforms have become vibrant spaces where craftspeople can showcase their work to a global audience. This resurgence isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s about sustainability and preserving cultural heritage.
Supporting handcrafts goes beyond just acquiring beautiful objects. It’s about valuing the craftsmanship and the traditions that come with them. We must recognize the skill and artistry of artisans. It’s essential to ensure that these crafts continue to thrive in our modern world.
As we navigate the conveniences of industrialization, let’s not lose sight of the timeless appeal of handcrafted goods. We can merge the efficiency of industry with the artistry of craftsmanship. This fusion will create a future that’s innovative. It will also remain deeply rooted in tradition. So, the next time you’re considering a purchase, think about the story behind it and the hands that crafted it. In doing so, we honor the past and inspire a future rich with creativity and craftsmanship.

I’ve been super busy with creative thoughts lately, juggling between designing pieces and venturing into video creation to give you an idea of what I do. Filming an interesting, informative, or entertaining video is a whole new learning process and takes a ton of time. Amid all of that, trying to be present in my family life has left me with little time to brainstorm blog ideas. However, I’ve just had an epiphany for a topic! Why this topic, you might ask? Well, the last two pieces I designed were based on concepts that clients had seen elsewhere. They wanted me to create something similar, but I took it as just a suggestion—a starting point. Only later did I realize that they wanted exactly what they had seen, yet with a unique twist. This is where imagination kicks in.
The Art of Creation: Why Imagination is Essential in Designing Custom Solid Wood Furniture
As a furniture maker, there’s nothing more exhilarating than the opportunity to transform a simple piece of wood into a unique creation that embodies both form and function. When clients entrust me with the creative freedom to design a piece of solid wood furniture for their home, it opens up a world of possibilities. Here’s why allowing me to use my imagination is crucial in crafting something truly special:
Crafting Unique and Personal Pieces: Each client brings their own story and style, and my goal is to reflect that in the furniture I create. By tapping into my imagination, I can design pieces that are not only functional but also deeply personal and unique. This creative freedom allows me to tailor each design to the specific needs and preferences of the client, ensuring that the final piece is a true reflection of their individuality.
Celebrating the Beauty of Wood: Wood is a living material with its own character and charm. My experience has taught me to appreciate its natural grain patterns, color variations, and even its imperfections. By embracing these features creatively, I can enhance the wood’s inherent beauty, crafting pieces that are not just furniture but works of art.
Innovating Functional Design: Imagination fuels innovation. When I’m given the freedom to explore new ideas, I can devise creative solutions that address common design challenges. Whether it’s maximizing storage in a compact space or creating versatile, multi-functional pieces, my imaginative approach ensures that the furniture is as practical as it is beautiful.
Championing Sustainability: Imagination also plays a crucial role in sustainability. By thinking creatively, I can make the most of available materials and minimize waste. This might involve repurposing offcuts or incorporating reclaimed wood, resulting in environmentally friendly designs that contribute to a more sustainable future.
Honoring Artisan Craftsmanship: Every piece I create is a testament to the art of craftsmanship. When clients allow me the creative freedom to design, they support the preservation of traditional woodworking skills and encourage the ongoing evolution of my craft. This partnership results in furniture that is crafted with passion, precision, and a deep attention to detail.
In essence, when clients trust me to use my imagination in designing their solid wood furniture, they invite innovation, artistry, and a personal touch into their homes. This creative freedom allows me to craft pieces that are not only functional but also a true expression of both my craft and their unique style. So, when considering a custom piece, remember the value of imagination and the endless possibilities it can bring to your living space.

Just wanted to share a quick update on the Fox Island Furniture Project. I’m almost done with the two credenzas; they just need shelves and backs. I’ll be picking up the materials for those next week. The record player cabinet is almost ready too—just waiting on some hinges to arrive, and I should have it wrapped up by the end of the week. After that, I’ll dive into making the TV cabinet and the big record storage unit. Can’t wait to see it all come together!
I also want to thank the clients for their awesome patience. I know this waiting period is always the hardest part, but I make sure to keep them informed about where we are in the process. There understanding means a lot!
In the meantime, I’ve designed a coffee table that will showcase belt buckles for a client who is a dog breeder and trainer in the Snoqualmie area. She’s signed up and ready, so keep an eye out for that build soon. Additionally, I’m working on designing a record cabinet for a new client who is currently deciding whether to proceed with the build. Things are moving forward nicely. I also have an armoire to build for a returning client for whom I crafted one for his guest room last year. So keep in touch! I will be posting updates on the progress as I go and will add videos as well. I’m trying to include content that might interest my subscribers.
